Hi friends! I’m so excited to share my classic style wardrobe guide! Creating a classic and timeless wardrobe can simplify your life and ensure you always look and feel put together. Throughout my life, I’ve tried many different styles and always seem to gravitate back to the classics. This guide will walk you through the essential pieces, tips, and tricks to curate a wardrobe that stands the test of time.
Why Choose a Classic and Timeless Wardrobe?
A classic wardrobe is built around high-quality, versatile pieces that never go out of style. Investing in timeless, classic pieces can save money in the long run and reduce the need for constant shopping to keep up with the latest trends. A well-curated wardrobe also makes getting dressed each day quicker and easier. Additionally, a classic wardrobe works for any age and any stage of life. Whether you’re 20 or 80, classic style will always be in style! As a busy stay-at-home mom, I feel my best when I get dressed every day. I have found that a wardrobe grounded in timeless pieces (with a few fun trendy pieces mixed in here and there!) is what works best for my busy lifestyle.
Essential Pieces for a Timeless Wardrobe (In No Particular Order)
While a classic style wardrobe will feature more pieces, this list is a good starting point! Once you have the foundation laid, you can gradually add more pieces.
1. Little Black Dress
A little black dress (LBD) is a must-have for any timeless wardrobe. It’s versatile, elegant, and suitable for numerous occasions. Look for a simple, well-fitted design that you can dress up or down with accessories. Here are some of my favorites.
2. Classic White Shirt
A crisp white shirt pairs well with almost anything. Whether you’re wearing it to the office or for a casual outing, this staple item always looks polished. While I no longer work in an office setting, I still find myself reaching for my favorite white button-up shirt quite often. In the summer months, I reach for a white linen button-up.
3. Striped Top
A striped top is another wardrobe must-have. It’s so versatile and can be worn in all seasons, depending on how you style it.
4. Tailored Blazer
A tailored blazer adds a level of sophistication to any outfit. Choose a neutral color like black or navy for maximum versatility. For the fall season, there is nothing like a good tweed or houndstooth blazer.
5. Quality Jeans
Invest in a pair of quality jeans that fit you well. While I think having classic cut jeans such as straight-leg or bootcut in a dark wash is definitely recommended, I do find that this is where opting for trendier pieces is okay. A few years ago, you couldn’t pry the high-rise skinny jeans out of my cold dead hands. Now, I’ve come around and enjoy wearing more “on tread” (though they were in style years ago, too) jeans such as flared or frayed. Do what works for you! Here are some good options, ranging from high to low.
6. Trench Coat
When I think of classic style, one of the first things I think of is a good trench coat. A trench coat is perfect for transitional weather and instantly elevates your look. Stick to traditional colors like beige, black, or navy.
7. Neutral Sweaters & Tops
Neutral-colored sweaters and tops are great for layering and can be paired with almost any bottom. Some of my favorite sweaters include cable-knit and cashmere. For the fall and winter, I love a ribbed turtleneck.
8. Classic Handbag
A classic handbag in a neutral shade like black or brown will complement any outfit. Choose a style that’s both functional and timeless. However, if I’m being honest, I’m in a stage of life where I’m not grabbing my favorite leather handbag every time I go out. I am a mom and have two small children and right now the leather bag isn’t what I’m using. My go-to bag lately has been my L.L. Bean boat and tote. It’s the perfect size to pack all of the things my kids need, as well as items for me. The tote bag is a classic, for a more personal touch, you can get it monogrammed.
9. Timeless Shoes
When it comes to shoes, some of my favorites include a leather pair of loafers, ballet flats, white sneakers, sandals, and ankle boots. These shoes can match almost any outfit and never go out of style. This is just to get you started, you can of course add more once you get your wardrobe established.
10. Simple, Yet Elegant Accessories
Less is more when it comes to accessories. I wear my pearl earrings or small good hoop earrings daily. I’ve also been wearing a simple gold necklace. I’ve found that just the accessories alone can really elevate an otherwise simple outfit. But don’t overdo it! Simple is better.
How to Build Your Timeless Wardrobe
Step 1: Assess Your Current Wardrobe
Start by evaluating your existing wardrobe. Remove items that are trendy, worn out, or don’t fit well. This will make space for timeless pieces.
Step 2: Identify Gaps
Make a list of essential pieces you’re missing. Focus on high-quality, versatile items that can be mixed and matched.
Step 3: Invest in Quality
Quality is key when building a timeless wardrobe. Invest in well-made clothing that will last. Look for natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk.
Step 4: Stick to a Neutral Color Palette
Neutral colors are the foundation of a classic wardrobe. They’re easy to mix and match, allowing you to create numerous outfits with fewer pieces.
Step 5: Tailor Your Clothes
Proper fit is crucial. Ensure your clothes fit perfectly by getting them tailored. Well-fitted clothing looks more polished and professional.
Step 6: Accessorize Wisely
Choose classic accessories like pearl earrings, a leather belt, and a silk scarf. These items can add personality to your outfits without overpowering them.
