Fair Isle Sweaters

Happy November!! Can you believe that it’s already November?! We celebrated Kit’s first birthday yesterday and I just can’t get over how quickly this year is going by. This week, the temperatures really dropped and we woke up to our first frost! And as I type this, Aaron is building the first fire of the season in our woodstove. This afternoon, Teddy, Kit, and I had some fun in the backyard playing in the leaves. Because it was so chilly, I broke out my Fair Isle sweater, one of my favorite pieces to wear in the fall and winter. It’s wool, so it’s guaranteed to keep you warm! Fair Isle sweaters are a great wardrobe item to have during the colder months. Plus, they’re classic!

Wool always makes me a little itchy, so I usually wear a turtleneck under my Fair Isle sweaters. This helps prevent any itchiness and also adds another layer. My favorite turtlenecks are from Talbots.

So in today’s post, I thought it would be fun to round up some Fair Isle sweaters that I thought were perfect for the fall and the winter. And some are even festive for Christmas! So fun!

A Quick History of the Fair Isle Sweater

Did you know Fair Isle sweaters have been around for over a hundred years? And they first became popular with the Royal Family? I learned that they originated in the Fair Isle, a small island in the north of Scotland. Fair Isle sweaters are knitted using a technique known as Fair Isle knitting, where you create various patterns with multiple colors of yarn. Originally, Fair Isle sweaters were worn by fishermen who worked in the cold and harsh conditions of the North Sea. The beautiful and intricate patterns on the sweaters helped to distinguish the fishermen from different villages. This made it easier for their bodies to be returned to their home village if they died at sea.

Over time, the Fair Isle sweater became popular with tourists who visited the island and were drawn to the unique patterns and colors. Today, they are still popular and often associated with classic and preppy styles.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this post and that you’ll be able to add a beautiful and classic Fair Isle sweater (or two!) to your fall and winter wardrobe. As always, you can shop my posts here and please be sure to follow and say Hi over on Instagram!!
