How to Build a Classic Maternity-Friendly Wardrobe That Feels Like You
Pregnancy comes with so many changes—but your style doesn’t have to be one of them. If you’re someone who gravitates toward classic, timeless fashion, it is possible to maintain your signature look while dressing your growing bump. In this post, I’m sharing how to build a maternity-friendly wardrobe rooted in classic style—so you can feel confident, polished, and like yourself during every trimester.
I’m currently pregnant with baby number three (a boy!) and I’ve learned a lot about what actually works when it comes to maternity-friendly fashion. Let’s dive into what I’ve found to be truly helpful—both in function and in style.
Here are my tips on how to build a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe.
1. Invest in Classic Staples That Work During Pregnancy and After

The key to building a timeless maternity-friendly wardrobe? Don’t overhaul your closet—just add a few strategic, bump-friendly staples. These are my go-to pieces that look polished and work across all trimesters:
- Oversized button-downs – Classic, polished, and bump-friendly. Wear them open over a fitted tank, or tie them above your bump for a little shape. This one is my favorite and I have it in a few colors!
- Stretchy sweater dresses – For fall and winter bumps, sweater dresses are a great option for a one-and-done outfit. Just add boots or loafers, and you’re set. Here are some options: here, here, and here
- Smocked dresses – I love a good smocked dress and they work wonders for pregnancy. I love the ones from Hill House, Quince, and Tuckernuck.
- Long cardigans and blazers – These instantly make any outfit feel put-together while giving you a little structure. I’m not in the office so I don’t really wear blazers in my stage of my life, but I’ve been wearing this and this on repeat this pregnancy. They run big so I kept my normal size (M) for pregnancy. If I wasn’t pregnant, I would size down.
These wardrobe staples not only look timeless, but they’re pieces you’ll wear long after pregnancy.
2. Choose Maternity Pieces Wisely (Keep It Minimal!)
Let’s be real: maternity jeans can make a huge difference—but you don’t need a whole wardrobe of specialty pieces. Here are the few I truly recommend investing in:
- Maternity jeans that don’t scream maternity – I recently bit the bullet and bought these maternity jeans. Yes, they’re a little pricey but I wear these jeans every.single.day. I went back and forth on paying $200 for maternity jeans since I would only be wearing them for a short time. But honestly, this is baby number 3 and I just want to look and feel my best and I’m tired of paying less for maternity pants I absolutely hatteeee. To be honest, I’m thinking of buying another pair, they’re that good! Here are some of my favorite maternity jeans: here, here, and here.
- A classic, neutral maternity dress – Something you can dress up or down, like this one and this one and this one.
- Maternity-friendly tees or tanks – Perfect for layering under blazers, cardigans, or denim jackets. I own and love this, and this one in multiple colors!
You’ll get the most out of your wardrobe when you mix a few true maternity staples with your regular pieces that still work.
3. Stick to a Neutral, Mix-and-Match Color Palette
If you want your wardrobe to feel cohesive, choose timeless colors like:
- Navy
- Camel
- White
- Soft pastels
- Black and gray
These shades layer well and help you create outfits that feel polished with minimal effort. Add interest with accessories like silk scarves, structured handbags, or bold gold jewelry.

4. Comfort and Style Can Coexist
Let’s be real—pregnancy is not the time for stiff fabrics or fussy silhouettes. Prioritize:
- Stretchy, breathable fabrics – Cotton, jersey, and cashmere are lifesavers.
- Adjustable waistbands – Wrap dresses and drawstring pants will grow with you.
- Supportive but stylish shoes – Loafers, ballet flats, and sneakers will keep you comfy without sacrificing style.
Final Thoughts: You Can Stay True to Your Style
Pregnancy may be unpredictable, but your wardrobe doesn’t have to be. By combining a few classic staples with smart maternity finds, you can build a maternity-friendly wardrobe that works through every stage—and beyond.
The best part? Most of these items will stay in your closet long after the baby arrives, making them worth every penny.
