How to Build a Classic Style Maternity-Friendly Wardrobe

In today’s post, I’m sharing my best tips for building a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe—but first, let’s catch up!

This week, I’m officially 24 weeks pregnant. I won’t lie, the first trimester felt never-ending with all the morning sickness and exhaustion, but somehow, I’m already just weeks away from the third trimester! We had our anatomy scan a few weeks ago and found out we’re having a boy! Right now, the plan is for Teddy and Kit to share a room—they’re so excited about getting bunk beds! The baby will eventually move into Kit’s room, so I’ve been deep in the Pinterest rabbit hole looking up nursery ideas and shared room inspiration. Lots to do before baby boy comes in July!

Okay, on to today’s post. So, one question I’ve been getting a lot lately is about maternity style. Specifically how to build a maternity-friendly wardrobe that is timeless and classic. One part of pregnancy that can be challenging is finding things to wear that are comfortable but still make you feel like you. It can feel like a daily puzzle. One day, your jeans fit. The next? Not a chance. But just because your body is changing doesn’t mean your style needs to change, too. This is baby number three for me, and trust me, I’ve learned a thing or two about building a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe. So let’s drive in!

Here are my tips on how to build a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe.

1. Stick to Classic Staples That Work for your Pregnancy wardrobe (and After!)

Here’s the deal: to build a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe, you don’t need a whole new wardrobe, just a few strategic pieces that will grow with you. Here are some of my absolute favorites:

  • Oversized button-downs – Classic, polished, and bump-friendly. Wear them open over a fitted tank, or tie them above your bump for a little shape. This one is my favorite and I have it in a few colors!
  • Stretchy sweater dresses – For fall and winter bumps, sweater dresses are a great option for a one-and-done outfit. Just add boots or loafers, and you’re set. Here are some options: here, here, and here
  • Smocked dresses – I love a good smocked dress and they work wonders for pregnancy. I love the ones from Hill House, Quince, and Tuckernuck
  • Long cardigans and blazers –  These instantly make any outfit feel put-together while giving you a little structure. I’m not in the office so I don’t really wear blazers in my stage of my life, but I’ve been wearing this and this on repeat this pregnancy. They run big so I kept my normal size (M) for pregnancy. If I wasn’t pregnant, I would size down.

2. Maternity Pieces? Yes, But Keep It Minimal.

I won’t lie—some maternity clothes just make life easier. But you don’t need a closet full of them. Here’s what I think is actually worth the investment:

  • Maternity jeans that don’t scream maternity – I recently bit the bullet and bought these maternity jeans. Yes, they’re a little pricey but I wear these jeans every.single.day. I went back and forth on paying $200 for maternity jeans since I would only be wearing them for a short time. But honestly, this is baby number 3 and I just want to look and feel my best and I’m tired of paying less for maternity pants I absolutely hatteeee. To be honest, I’m thinking of buying another pair, they’re that good! Here are some of my favorite maternity jeans: here, here, and here.
  • A classic, neutral maternity dress – Something you can dress up or down, like this one and this one and this one.
  • Maternity-friendly tees or tanks – Perfect for layering under blazers, cardigans, or denim jackets. I own and love this, and this one in multiple colors!

3. For A classic Style Maternity-Friendly wardrobe, Neutrals Are Your Best Friend

A classic wardrobe is all about effortless mix-and-match outfits, which is why sticking to navy, black, camel, white, and soft pastels will save you from those I have nothing to wear moments. Want to add a little fun? A well-placed scarf or structured handbag will do the trick.

4. Comfort and Style Can Coexist

Let’s be real—pregnancy is not the time for stiff fabrics or fussy silhouettes. Prioritize:

  • Stretchy, breathable fabrics – Cotton, jersey, and cashmere are lifesavers.
  • Adjustable waistbandsWrap dresses and drawstring pants will grow with you.
  • Supportive but stylish shoes – Loafers, ballet flats, and sneakers will keep you comfy without sacrificing style.

Final Thoughts on Creating a classic Style maternity-friendly wardrobe

Pregnancy can be unpredictable, but your style doesn’t have to be. With a mix of classic staples and a few smart maternity buys you can create a classic style maternity-friendly wardrobe that makes you feel like you.

The best part? Most of these pieces will work long after pregnancy, which means less money spent on things you’ll only wear for a few months. A win-win!
